When making my smoothies, i’ve noticed how quickly the strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries expire and grow mould. This is not ideal and can be very costly in the long run. Here is what I do to extend their life.
Firstly, don’t wash the berries as a whole packet, only wash what you eat or use. Using an air tight container tends to help, away from moisture and straight into the fridge. Keeping the fruit at a cool, moderate temperature will always help.
My favourite option is to freeze them. Once out the freezer, I wash the berries and treat them as an alternative to ice. You still get the nutritional goodness, with the bonus of a nice, cold, refreshing drink on a hot day. If you were to use them for baking, keep in mind that once the berries have defrosted they will be much softer than when first bought, so ideally use straight away.
